The 12th anniversary of the National Apology to the Survivors of the Stolen Generations and their families is to be acknowledged with a free community event held on Thursday 13 February 2020 at Veale Gardens in Adelaide.

The day marks the anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s historic apology in 2008 to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples removed from their families.

‘The suffering experienced by the Stolen Generations continues to this day, and is also felt by the generations that have followed,’ says Andrew Drummond of Uniting Communities. ‘We need to acknowledge this ongoing impact as part of the healing process.’

Led by a collective of local community organisations, the event will focus on sharing stories of intergenerational healing. It will include healing activities for attendees to participate in, a Kaurna Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, music, art, storytelling and a community BBQ.

The organising committee includes representatives from Uniting Communities, Reconciliation SA, Nunkuwarrin Yunti of SA, Relationships Australia SA, Tauondi Aboriginal College, Life Without Barriers, Baptist Care, Healing Foundation and the Aboriginal Sobriety Group.

The City of Adelaide is a major sponsor, with the event to be held following a commemorative breakfast event at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
