08/08/19

Local housing service, Kurlana Tampawardli, will open its doors to the community on Wednesday 14 August for its annual Yarning Circle Open Day.

Local housing service, Kurlana Tampawardli, will open its doors to the community on Wednesday 14 August for its annual Yarning Circle Open Day.

Held as part of the service’s Homelessness Week events, the Open Day will include a visit from Port Power Football Club players, as well as traditional kangaroo tail and damper cooked over a fire pit, a barbeque and JEDDA the caravan café.

‘We’ve been running our Open Day for three years now,’ says Service Manager, Ruth Tulloch. ‘It’s a great chance to welcome the community in as we shine a spotlight on the issue of homelessness for people visiting Adelaide from rural and remote South Australia.’

Kurlana Tampawardli is a culturally specific homelessness service for Aboriginal people transitioning from rural and remote areas in the far north of the state. It provides accommodation for individuals, families and couples who may be at risk of rough sleeping while in Adelaide. Its four onsite houses can accommodate up to 20 people.

The service also provides access to community outreach houses, support for people returning to country after sleeping rough and case management support, as well as an independent life skills program.

One of the most popular and well-attended aspects of the life skills program is ‘The Yarning Circle’ where a meal is provided – quite often kangaroo or a warming stew – and families come together for food and cultural connection, as well as the age-old tradition of yarning one-on-one or as a group. The event will incorporate the traditions of the yarning circle, encouraging attendees to connect with others in the community.

Fun children’s activities will be held on the day too.
