Our physical and mental health are inherently interconnected. When our physical health suffers, our mental health can too – and vice versa. In our older years, when health status can change quickly, some physical health conditions can also lead to a change in mental wellness.

Delirium is one common condition that can be brought about by a change in physical health. It affects a person’s mental ability and can develop quickly with fluctuating symptoms. It can impact a person’s mind, emotions, muscle control and sleep patterns.

A person’s symptoms can include having trouble concentrating or feeling confused as to their whereabouts. They may move more slowly or quickly than usual, and experience mood swings. Delirium is best managed and complications can be decreased if it’s recognised early and its potential causes are addressed.

People aged over 65 with pre-existing conditions are at the highest risk. Delirium may arise after surgery or a bout of illness, or it can be due to pain or medication changes. Sometimes the cause is unknown.

It can be very distressing for the person involved, but also for their families and loved ones as it can result in significant and quick changes in behaviour and mental state.

Pre-existing cognitive conditions such as dementia can increase the risk of someone developing delirium. At times, it can even be mistaken for dementia, which can lead to a delay in the person receiving the right treatment and support.

Being alert to changes in your own or your loved one’s physical and mental wellness – and investigating these with your general practitioner if you’re concerned – is an important step in making sure you remain both physically and mentally well.
