New Loneliness by Numbers report
To mark Loneliness Awareness Week, Uniting Communities has released Loneliness by Numbers: A South Australian Snapshot — a new report highlighting who is most impacted by loneliness and how we can respond as a community.
We have been surveying the South Australian population since 2020; our latest data demonstrates that loneliness is still a significant issue in the community.
Alarmingly, young people aged 18-24 and people aged 55-59 experience the highest rates of feeling lonely ‘often.’

Moments Matter event at Hope’s Café
Hosted by Uniting Communities and Baptist Care SA through the Community Connections Program, Moments Matter offers a relaxed, no-pressure space to connect over free coffee and melting moment biscuits, and enjoy creative self-expression activities.
This free event celebrates the power of small moments — a smile, a shared story, a simple hello to spark connection and remind us that we all matter.
The event will take place at Hope’s Café, Norwood on Tuesday 5th August from 10am–2pm, as part of Loneliness Awareness Week Australia.
Prescriptions for Connection
A new trial, focused on Social Prescribing in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, works alongside local GP’s and other healthcare professionals to identify and connect older adults with community social programs.
Find out more about how they have been working to foster social connection and enhance wellbeing across the region.
New Social Impact grants
The Department of Human Services has released new grants of up to $10,000 that are now available for short-term, community-driven projects that support connection, wellbeing, and resilience, especially in areas facing disadvantage.
$500,000 pledged to tackle loneliness
Adelaide-based organisation Spark has received nearly $500,000 from the Federal Government to expand its innovative, community-led approach to tackling loneliness and fostering stronger, more connected communities across South Australia.
Uniting Communities is pleased to be a project partner, advising on the initiative as it grows. Originally co-designed in the Adelaide Hills by researchers from the University of South Australia in partnership with The Hut Community Centre and local residents, Spark has gained momentum for its grassroots model — inviting people to connect in welcoming, low-pressure environments hosted by volunteers known as Sparkies.

National Loneliness Awareness Week
Loneliness Awareness Week 2025, running from 4–10 August, centres on the theme Moments Matter, spotlighting the power of small, meaningful interactions to spark connection. Co-designed with young people aged 16–25, the campaign invites Australians to share real moments—whether a compliment, a shared hobby, or a simple hello—that helped them feel seen and valued.
Through storytelling, social media engagement, and community resources, the initiative aims to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and inspire action across homes, schools, workplaces, and online space.
New resources on connection
As part of Loneliness Awareness Week 2025, Ending Loneliness Together has launched a suite of new resources designed to foster meaningful social connections—especially among young people aged 16–25.
These practical tools include conversation starters, digital assets, and a youth-focused research report, all aimed at deepening understanding of loneliness and social isolation.
Download the resources to explore evidence-based strategies and discover simple ways to spark connection at home, school, work, and in your community.
