Uniting Communities -
The Voice to Parliament

08/06/23

This year, our country will be asked an important and overdue question:

A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?

It is one question that has sparked many conversations about where we have come from, where we would like to go and, for many Australians, who we are as a community.

For many, it is a complex question which requires a simple answer: yes or no.

Uniting Communities supports the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Islander peoples and the creation of a Voice, as a powerful mechanism to enable participation and direction, at the highest levels, on issues that affect them.

Across our state, we work to enrich the lives of individuals, families and their communities. Every day, we see the power of self determination as well as the importance of inclusion and lived experience in creating a better, fairer future for all.

As an organisation that supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, we believe the establishment of a Voice is an important and meaningful step forward, as our community also works toward negotiating Treaty and supporting Truth Telling.

Over the coming months, in conversations across our communities, we advocate for informed, respectful discussion based on what this question is, not speculation on what it may be.

We embrace education. Above all, we encourage listening and healing.

We acknowledge the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the weight that these discussions may place on them.

In publicly declaring our support for this constitutional change, we re-commit ourselves to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, today and into the future.
