Helping children in care to safely return home

17/05/22

Uniting Communities’ Newpin program continues to provide a safe and welcoming environment for children in care to reconnect with their families.

Since Newpin opened in July 2021, 15 children have been successfully reunited with their families and 2 more are currently in transition to go home. The children, most aged under 6 have been regularly attending the engagement program which helps re-establish relationships so that children can return to live safely with their family in their community.

“Tragically, a large number of very young children are placed in care each year due to abuse and neglect. This can be very damaging and often results in an ongoing pattern of families and children struggling to find their place in the world,” says Leisha Olliver, Newpin Service Manager.

“Newpin helps families, with very young children aged six and under, towards reunification when it is safe and possible.  It is so important for these families to have a place where they feel comfortable to come together, reconnect and develop new trusting, supportive relationships and have the opportunity to address their trauma and build on their parenting capacity.”

A second Newpin centre opened in Port Adelaide in January which includes a space that will be converted into a ‘Men’s Shedgroup’ for art and cultural activities such as basket weaving and boomerang making. A third centre servicing the southern region will open in July. Between the 3 centres, Newpin will support over 224 families over 7 years.
